Gordon Brown calls for sanctions after Iran nuclear vote

Gordon Brown led calls for new sanctions against Iran
after the UN’s nuclear watchdog issued the country with its first
official rebuke in almost four years.
Delegates at the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) in Vienna overwhelmingly backed a resolution expressing dismay
at the discovery of a secret nuclear facility buried deep in a mountain
bunker near the holy city of Qom.
A senior US official in Vienna said China and Russia had helped
frame the resolution, a development that marked the depth of
exasperation among Tehran’s allies over its behaviour. The US
State Department said talks with Iran had now reached a “dead
end”.
Mr Brown warned Iran must quickly demonstrate a change of heart to
prevent the United Nations imposing more sanctions on its economy. Iran
could now face additional sanctions in time for Security Council
endorsement early next year.
