JERUSALEM — Vice President Joe Biden began a visit to Israel and the West Bank on Monday, assuring Israelis in a newspaper interview that Washington would close ranks with them against any threat from a nuclear-armed Iran.

Biden, the most senior U.S. official to visit Israel since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009, is widely expected to caution his hosts not to attack Iran pre-emptively while world powers pursue fresh sanctions against Tehran.

He made no comment on his arrival at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion airport and had no publicly scheduled meetings before talks on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.

Biden meets Palestinian leaders in the West Bank on Wednesday.

A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 57 people, officials have said.

The 6.0-magnitude quake, centred on the village of Basyurt in Elazig province, struck at 0432 (0232 GMT). It has been followed by more than 40 aftershocks.

Officials said the nearby village of Okcular had been almost destroyed and several others badly damaged.

A number of people were trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings, many of which were built of mud-bricks.

“Villages consisting mainly of mud-brick houses have been damaged, but we have minimal damage such as cracks in buildings made of cement or stone,” Elazig Governor Muammer Erol told CNN Turk.

A DUTCH undercover journalist has managed to carry on what could have been liquid explosives onto a flight from Amsterdam to the US.

The Detroit News said the revelations came in a Dutch television program, Undercover in Nederland, which aired recently.

In the show, journalist Alberto Stegeman demonstrates how he managed to smuggle six litres of water from Schiphol International Airport and on to England’s Heathrow International Airport.

According to a business associate, he travelled with the items undetected at Dulles International Airport in Washington.

A press release for the program says the stunt exposes security weaknesses at Amsterdam’s airport – months after a failed terrorist attack on a Detroit-bound flight from the airport.

Japanese World War II Ship Shelled Pterosaur Caves

Three days ago, I received an email from R.K. (anonymous), of the Manus Island area of Papua New Guinea. (We starting communicating earlier this month.) The nocturnal flying creatures that he described to me–I believe they are ropens–were common and were dangerous to local fishermen previous to the early 1940’s, when their numbers declined. In these northern islands, the creature is called “kor.”

Here is part of R.K.’s account of the Japanese retaliation against the creatures that had attacked them:

”…it was the japs [Japanese miliary] on the island who were attacked by the kor. They [Japanese soldiers] apparently shot several wounding them then followed them to cves [caves] and blew [blew up] the entrances. They called ships fire on the hills and pounded them for several hours.”

R.K. asks an interesting question: “I wonder if there is a record of that somewhere?” Perhaps there is an old Japanese veteran who knows about this or has written about the battle with those creatures. If so, perhaps the word used for those creatures would be “dragons.”

The Kor of Northern Papua New Guinea

R.K., of Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, reports that the glowing nocturnal flying creature of those northern islands is called “kor.” Descriptions strongly suggest that they are at least similar to the ropen of Umboi Island, perhaps the same species: glowing with various colors, a long tail, “skin all over it,” and a few creatures growing to a large size. A few American investigators (some of them exploring in some areas of Papua New Guinea) are convinced that these are living pterosaurs.

According to what R.K. has learned from some older villagers, the kor catch fish “by skimming slowly around on the ocean surface, then as the light under their wings and belly glowed bright and attracted fish, the korr would swoop in . . . ” and “they eat in flight.”

But these are not just old reports. R.K. has reported his own encounter [early 2010 report]: “Two years ago we took a boat out to investigate and could see the lights soaring over us and heard flapping of wings.”

Older web page reports of smaller “ropens” around Manus Island (as if these were a different species because of size) are questionable. One kor was large enough to kill an islander in the 1960’s (according to R.K., this was the last human death from an attack). Perhaps the reports of smaller creatures come from the larger number of younger ones. Larger ones are reported to eat turtles and even young crocodiles. Some animals continue to grow throughout their lives; perhaps the kor, on occasion, also grows to a large size.

World War II Veteran Saw Giant Living “Pterodactyl”

Duane Hodgkinson, now a flight instructor in Livingston, Montana, in 1944 was stationed near Finschhafen, in what was then called New Guinea. After he and his buddy walked into a clearing, they were amazed as a large creature flew up into the air. The men soon realized that it was no bird that started to circle the clearing. It had a tail “at least ten to fifteen feet long,” (book Searching for Ropens, 2007) and a long appendage at the back of its head: apparently, a live pterosaur.

Jonathan Whitcomb, a forensic videographer, interviewed Hodgkinson, in 2004, and found his testimony credible. In 2005, Garth Guessman, another experienced ropen investigator, video-taped his own interview with Hodgkinson and the session was analyzed by Whitcomb, who became even more convinced the World War II veteran was telling the truth: The man had seen a ropen.

INVESTIGATIONS

In late 2006, Paul Nation, of Texas, explored a remote mountainous area on the mainland of Papua New Guinea. He videotaped two lights that the local natives called “indava.” Nation believed the lights were from the bioluminescence of creatures similar to the ropen of Umboi Island. The video was analyzed by a missile defense physicist who reported that the two lights on the video were not from any fires, meteors, airplanes or camera artifacts. He also reported that the image of the two lights was authentic and was not manipulated or hoaxed.

In 2007, cryptid investigator Joshua Gates went to Papua New Guinea in search of the Ropen for his TV show Destination Truth. He and his team also witnessed strange lights at night and could not confirm what they were.

In 2009, the television show Monster Quest conducted an expedition in search of the “demon flyer” but found no evidence of the creature. Later, they had a forensic video analyst examine the Paul Nation video. The analyst could not definitely conclude what was causing the lights, but ruled out vehicles and campfires believing the footage was of a pair of bioluminescent creatures perched in a tree that later take flight.

In particular it triggers and arms the body’s T cells, the cells in the body that seek out and destroy any invading bacteria and viruses.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have discovered that Vitamin D is crucial to activating our immune defences and that without sufficient intake of the vitamin, the killer cells of the immune system – T cells – will not be able to react to and fight off serious infections in the body.

Mysterious Probes and ‘Reptilian’ Orb? – Southwestern Utah

The following photos were sent to me from ‘Fearless’ in southwestern Utah (approx. 140 miles from Groom Lake). The resolution was low but the photo technician was able to enhance two of the photos (without retouch or pixel manipulation) to form these remarkable images. ‘Reptilian’ is the first word that comes to mind. As well, the other photo looks like some type of probe. The photo technician stated… ‘the photos are so small and of such low resolution, that this is about all I can do without actually changing anything. As for the first orb, it is obviously a ‘probe’ of some type. It is not clearly defined, except that it appears to have ‘light protuberances’.

The ‘face’ appears (to me) to be reptilian. There is a what appears to be a ’snout’ angled to the foreground, with eyes set close to the top of the head, somewhat to the sides looking forward. The facial distort appears to be due to motion blur, some other unknown factor, or a combination of both.’

‘Fearless’ states the following:

We had an extensive lightening storm about 8 miles from my home. I was trying to capture lightening. I took over 400 photos within a 30 min period. During that time, I saw the many lights coming toward my house…from the south to the north. They seemed to be coming away from the lightening. I saw the bright light, then several more. The large disc was silver in color, which I have seen several times in the local area. It seemed to be hanging just watching me. I noticed the ‘face’ after downloading. It attached itself to the metal dolly handcart. It appears in several of the photos, in different stages of manifestation. I really didn’t notice any smells….but I do smell ozone quite often while I’m taking these kinds of pics. I see alot of activity out here.

My name is James Beaman. From Jan 1974 thru December 1975, I was stationed at Ft. Yukon Acws site in FT Yukon Alaska, which is part of the early warning system. The site was manned by USAF personnel. Many times during the evening shifts we would get radar images of unidentified aircraft molesting civilian aircraft bound to different destinations through out the world. These aircraft were incredibly fast and could turn on a dime. We had several times that the aircraft in question would molest an SR 71 heading through Alaskan airspace. You know haw fast the SR71 is. The manual ground speed, as determined by the operators was over 2600 hundred miles per hour. These craft would com in from different headings and molest the aircraft for a few minutes and then sped away in some different direction. Some of these turns were impossible for the Military and the civilian aircraft.

When these air space incursions happened to military and civilian aircraft alike Anchorage Center would yell on the hot box if we had any military aircraft molesting the civilian aircraft. Our procedure at the time was to turn on the scope camera to record the incidents. I am sure there are records of these interdictions in the USAF files, if you know what to look for.

The reason I am writing this letter today Is that I am watching the story of the JAL pilot that saw a UFO over Alaska in the 1980’s. I want to tell you that I am sure this Pilot saw what he saw. If you look deeper into the incidents over Alaskan Air Space you will definitely find the proof you need. I am not sure what the USAF did with the record of these incursions. But I know they happened and there is a lot of guys stationed in Fort Yukon, Alaska that could tell you more about these incidents.

The Fantastic Flight of JAL1628

November 17, 1986
Over northeastern Alaska

ufoevidence.org- It was just a routine flight. Well, not exactly routine…. It was a special Japan Air Lines 747 cargo flight to carry a load of French wine from Paris to Tokyo. The flight plan would carry flight 1628 from Paris to Reykjavik, Iceland, across the North Atlantic and Greenland, then across Canada to Anchorage, Alaska, and finally across the Pacific to Tokyo. The crew consisted of veteran Captain Kenju Terauchi, co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji, and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba.

On November 16, 1986, laden with wine, JAL1628 took off from Paris and flew the first leg of the trip, to Reykjavik. The next day, they continued, flying over Greenland and then across northern Canada without event.

Just after they crossed into Alaska, at 5:09 PM local time, Anchorage Air Traffic Control contacted them on the radio to report initial radar contact. The Anchorage flight controller asked them to turn 15 degrees to the left and head for a point known as Talkeetna on a heading of 215 degrees. They were at 35,000 feet and traveling at a ground speed of about 600 mph.

At about 5:11 PM local time, Captain Terauchi noticed the lights of some sort of aircraft about 2000 feet below and 30 degrees to the left front of them. He decided that the aircraft was probably an American jet fighter from nearby Eielson or Elmendorf Air Force Bases patrolling Alaskan airspace, so he ignored them at first. However, after a few minutes, he noticed that the lights were keeping pace with his own aircraft, which would be an unusual thing for patrolling jets to do.

It was about seven or so minutes since we began paying attention to the lights (when), most unexpectedly, two spaceships stopped in front of our face, shooting off lights. The inside cockpit shined brightly and I felt warm in the face.

Terauchi said that it was his impression that the two objects he had seen below them minutes before had suddenly jumped in from of him. The craft, one above the other, kept pace with the 747 for several minutes, moving in unison with an odd rocking motion. After about seven minutes, they changed to a side-by-side arrangement. Terauchi said that the “amber and whitish” lights were like flames coming out of multiple rocket exhaust ports arranged in two rectangular rows on the craft. He felt that they fired in a particular sequence to stabilize the craft, much like the small maneuvering thrusters on the Space Shuttle. He also reported seeing sparks like a fire when using gasoline or carbon fuel.

Co-pilot Tamefuji described the lights as “Christmas assorted” lights with a “salmon” color. He said: I remember red or orange, and white landing light, just like a landing light. And weak green, ah, blinking. He also described the lights as pulsating slowly. They became stronger, became weaker., became stronger, became weaker, different from strobe lights. The lights were “swinging” in unison as if there were “very good formation flight…close” of two aircraft side by side. He described the appearance of the lights as similar to seeing “night flight head-on traffic”, where it is only possible to see the lights on an approaching aircraft and “we can not see the total shape.” He said, I’m sure I saw something. It was clear enough to make me believe that there was an oncoming aircraft.

Flight engineer Tsukuba, who sat behind the copilot, did not have as good a view of the lights. He first saw them “through the L1 window at the 11 o’clock position” and he saw “clusters of lights undulating”. These clusters were “made of two parts…shaped like windows of an airplane”. He emphasized that “the lights in front of us were different from town lights.” He described the colors as white or amber.

Tamefuji decided to call Anchorage Air Traffic Control, and for the next thirty minutes the 747 and AARTCC were in constant contact regarding the UFO.

During this time, Captain Terauchi asked Tskububa to hand him a camera so that he could attempt to take a photograph of the lights. However, Terauchi was unfamiliar with the camera and could not get it to operate. Tsukuba also could not get his camera to operate due to problems with the auto-focus and finally gave up trying to take a photo.

At this point they began experiencing some radio interference and were asked by Anchorage to change frequencies. Terauchi later said that Anchorage kept asking him about clouds in the immediate area: They asked us several times if there were clouds near our altitude. We saw thin and spotty clouds near the mountain below us, no clouds in mid-to-upper air, and the air current was steady.

Soon after the exchanges about clouds, the objects flew off to the left. Terauchi said later: There was a pale white flat light in the direction where the ships flew away, moving in a line along with us, in the same direction and same speed and at the same altitude as we were.

Terauchi decided to see whether they could see anything on the 747’s own radar:

I thought it would be impossible to find anything on an aircraft radar if a large ground radar did not show anything, but I judged the distance of the object visually and it was not very far. I set the digital weather radar distance to 20 (nautical) miles, radar angle to horizon (i.e., no depression angle). There it was on the screen. A large green and round object had appeared at 7 or 8 miles (13 km to 15 km) away, where the direction of the object was. We reported to Anchorage center that our radar caught the object within 7 or 8 miles in the 10 o’clock position. We asked them if they could catch it on ground radar but it did not seem they could catch it at all

At 5:25:45, after spending two minutes looking, the military radar at Elmendorf Regional Operational Control Center also picked up something. The ROCC radar controller reported back to the AARTCC that he was getting some “surge primary return.” By this he meant an occasional radar echo unaccompanied by a transponder signal.

A Gigantic Spaceship!

As the 747 neared Fairbanks:
The lights (of the city) were extremely bright to eyes that were used to the dark. (The cockpit lights had been turned off to eliminate window reflections of internal lights.) We were just above the bright city lights and we checked the pale white light behind us. Alas! There was a silhouette of a gigantic spaceship. We must run away quickly! “Anchorage Center. The JAL1628 is requesting a change of course to right 45 degrees.” It felt like a long time before we received permission

Just after the plane turned to the right, the AARTCC controller called the Fairbanks Approach Radar controller to find out whether or not the short-range radar had a target near the JAL. The approach radar reported no target other than JAL1628.

The plane came out of the turn and flew toward Talkeetna at an altitude of 31,000 ft, with the object still following.

At about 5:40 a United Airlines passenger jet took off from Anchorage and headed north to Fairbanks. The AARTCC controller decided to ask the UA pilot to try to see the object that was following the JAL flight. The UA pilot said he would look when he got closer. The controller asked the JAL flight to stay at 31,000 ft and the UA flight to stay at 29,000 ft. He then directed the UA flight to turn some more so that the planes would pass within five miles of one another.

As the United Airlines jet got closer, the UFO apparently dropped behind, allowing the JAL plane to get far ahead. The United pilot asked the AARTCC to have the JAL pilot flash the headlights on the JAL aircraft so he could locate the plane. At 5:49:45 the JAL pilot did that. At this point the planes were about 25 miles apart.

When the planes were about 12 miles apart, the UA plane reported seeing the JAL plane and nothing else. But by this time the UFO had apparently disappeared, not being seen by JAL1628, either.

At about 5:51, the AARTCC requested that a military TOTEM flight in the area also fly toward the JAL plane for a look. During the next several minutes TOTEM viewed the JAL plane but couldn’t see any other traffic. JAL1628 proceeded to Anchorage and landed at 6:20 PM.

The FAA conducted an investigation of the incident, and did not issue its final report until March 5. CSICOP’s (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal)Phil Klass issued a premature statement on January 22 claiming that the UFOs were the planets Jupiter and Mars – an impossible solution because the UFO was seen in a part of the sky opposite the position of these planets and because the UFOs moved from positions one above the other to side by side. CSICOP later issued a second explanation that the UFO was light reflecting off of clouds of ice crystals – also unlikely because the sky was clear at the reported altitude of the UFO. The FAA attributed the radar images received by ground radar to a “split radar return from the JAL Boeing 747.”

Lately there have been a lot of shootings by people that have decided to resort to violence for what they see as an inequitable and unjust society.

I don’t know if the recently reported Wal-Mart shooter is one of these.

In the CNN video below, the talking heads are claiming that conspiracy theories are pushing people over the edge.

But people are not resorting to violence because of conspiracies (real or imagined). They are resorting to violence because they see their circumstances as intolerable and their society as unjust.

I know there are conspiracies. The government prosecutes criminals all the time for engaging in them. But that doesn’t make me want to shoot people. In fact, just the opposite. I want to make a real peaceful change so that we don’t have people resorting to violence.

But, as I have warned, we will see more and more people resorting to violence over the societal situation. Sure they are mentally unstable. But they are often pushed over the edge because of what they see going on around them.

When we have a break down in social justice and in a sense of fairness, and people don’t see peaceful alternatives, many will resort to violence…Grant Lawrence

Since the establishment media is convinced that tea party members, 9/11 truthers, libertarians, Ron Paul supporters, and basically anyone with a dissenting political opinion is a likely domestic terrorist, they should be celebrating the fact that a new bill would allow the government to detain such people as “enemy belligerents” indefinitely and without trial based on their “suspected activity”.

The “Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010,” introduced by Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Thursday with little fanfare, “sets out a comprehensive policy for the detention, interrogation and trial of suspected enemy belligerents who are believed to have engaged in hostilities against the United States by requiring these individuals to be held in military custody, interrogated for their intelligence value and not provided with a Miranda warning,” writes the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder.

The bill does not distinguish between U.S. citizens and non-citizens, and states that “suspected belligerents” who are “considered a “high-value detainee” shall not be provided with a Miranda warning.”

A person is considered a “high value detainee” if they fulfil one of the following criteria.

(1) poses a threat of an attack on civilians or civilian facilities within the U.S. or U.S. facilities abroad; (2) poses a threat to U.S. military personnel or U.S. military facilities; (3) potential intelligence value; (4) is a member of al Qaeda or a terrorist group affiliated with al Qaeda or (5) such other matters as the President considers appropriate.

Now that the Southern Poverty Law Center and the federal government, via the MIAC report and innumerable other leaked documents, now consider virtually anyone with a dissenting opinion against the state as “posing a threat,” millions of peaceful American citizens could be swept up by this frightening dragnet of tyranny.

However, according to the bill, an individual doesn’t even have to pose a threat to be snatched, detained and interrogated – they can merely be deemed to be of “potential intelligence value” or come under the vague and sweeping mandate of “such other matters as the President considers appropriate”.

This last designation hands Obama dictator powers to have any American citizen kidnapped, detained, and interrogated on a whim.

The only proviso that even hints at some form of check or balance is the measure that states, “The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Team must make a preliminary determination whether the detainee is an unprivileged enemy belligerent within 48 hours of taking detainee into custody.”

“The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Team must submit its determination to the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General after consultation with the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General make a final determination and report the determination to the President and the appropriate committees of Congress. In the case of any disagreement between the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General, the President will make the determination,” states the bill.

The ACLU has expressed its vigorous opposition to the legislation, labeling it nothing less than a “direct attack on the Constitution”.

“Indefinite detention flies in the face of American values and violates this country’s commitment to the rule of law,” states Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office.

Of course, such positions from the ACLU as well as Amnesty International will only be used as grist for the neo-con propaganda mill about how the bill ought to be passed in order to avoid being “soft on terrorists,” a piece of spin still being swallowed whole by millions of conservatives who are blissfully unaware of the fact that the apparatus of the war on terror is now being aimed squarely at politically active American citizens.

“Torture, indefinite imprisonment, secret trials and limited staged hearings are the stuff of cheap dictatorships,” writes Ian McColgin. “They are the sort of idiocy we scorned in the Soviets, the Koreans and the Vietnamese. It is astonishing that we have senators and citizens even discussing this bill which is not a capitulation to terrorism – it’s the triumph of terrorism.”

Homeland Security is already implementing technology to be enforced at “security events” which purportedly reads “malintent” on behalf of an individual who passes through a checkpoint. Perhaps the video below explains just how “enemy belligerents” will be identified on American soil.

The American Civil Liberties Union has never treated the Obama administration with kid gloves, but with their latest ad buy it’s become increasingly clear that their patience for the continuance of some Bush-era policies has run quite thin.

“What will it be Mr. President?” the ACLU asks in a full-page New York Times advertisement published Sunday. “Change or more of the Same?” The ad also features a portrait of Obama that morphs into Bush.

The ACLU’s images of the subtle transition between presidents is filtered and lacking in detail, and spans just four frames. However, it appears to be a take-off of a protest image that circulated Facebook and some progressive blogs late last year, showing a similar transition in eerie detail.

The ad specifically pressured the administration to hold fast to their decision to try the alleged 9/11 plotters in the judicial system and not by military tribunal as many Obama opponents have called for.

President Barack Obama’s administration had announced it would try self-confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other accused at a New York courthouse, just steps from where the World Trade Center once stood.

But the plan for the “trial of the century” met a backlash from Republican lawmakers who have introduced legislation to require a military trial, throwing a challenge to Obama months ahead of mid-term elections in November.

Obama made bringing Sheikh Mohammed to a civilian trial a centerpiece of a broader plan to end what he saw as serious abuses of law in the time of his predecessor George W. Bush and his powerful vice president Dick Cheney.

The Washington Post reported earlier this week that aides were recommending that Obama adopt Republicans’ position and proceed with a military trial as part of a deal that could help him shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison.

A White House official said Friday it would need weeks to decide on the trial of the accused 9/11 co-conspirators.

“As president, Barack Obama must decide whether he will keep his solemn promise to restore our Constitution and due process, or ignore his vow and continue the Bush-Cheney policies,” the ACLU ad read.

ACLU executive director Anthony Romero also wrote a letter to Obama saying these were “the most important terrorism trials — and arguably the most important criminal trials — in the entire history of the nation.

“We placed this ad because it’s critical that Americans know what is at stake here: nothing less than America’s commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. The military commissions are seriously flawed and unprepared to handle these complex cases. If President Obama reverses his attorney general’s principled decision under political pressure, it will strike a devastating blow to American values and do serious damage to our nation’s credibility. We urge the president to do the right thing and keep these cases in federal court, where they belong.”

“It would be a colossal mistake to reverse the administration’s decision to try these defendants in federal criminal court and again relegate these landmark trials to irretrievably defective military commissions.”

However the plan has seen growing opposition from groups criticizing the cost of security in Manhattan and in some cases the principle of providing civilian trials with greater protections for the alleged 9/11 plotters.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg changed his mind at the end of January after initially backing the civilian trial in Manhattan, suggesting that the highly sensitive case could instead proceed on a military base.

In its ad, the ACLU noted that the US criminal justice system has “successfully handled” more than 300 terror-related cases, compared to only three by military commission.

President Obama has tapped a former Army general to lead the Transportation Security Administration, sources have told CNN.

Obama plans to nominate Robert A. Harding, a retired major general with 33 years in the Army, to become the TSA administrator, sources said. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will announce the nomination Monday with Harding by her side, according to one administration official.

“The TSA administrator is the most important unfilled post in the Obama administration,” one administration official said. “Mr. Harding has the experience and perspective to make a real difference in carrying out the mission of the agency.”

“If there was ever a nominee that warranted expedited, but detailed, consideration in the Senate, this is it,” the official said.

A witness to the shooting in front of the Pentagon says he is still reeling from being taken in by police that day.

“I was thinking I was going to die,” Dan Namisi told NBC4. “I am very traumatized with this whole experience.”

Namisi was on his way home to Virginia when John Patrick Bedell opened fire at the entrance to the Pentagon Thursday. When it was over, police said Bedell was the lone gunman who injured two police officers before being fatally shot.

But soon after Namisi heard the shots, he found himself in handcuffs.

“I heard a ‘pop! pop!’ so I ducked down to the ground,” he recalled. “They gave commands to lay down flat and then they handcuffed me. And I was puzzled. Why are they handcuffing me?”

Police did not tell Namisi, who was trying to get to his home in Burke, why he was in handcuffs — or why it took three hours for him to be released.

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Pakistani lawmakers refused to subject themselves to a controversial full-body scan at a Washington airport, a media report said on Sunday.

The six-member group of the parliament members from Pakistan’s restive tribal region cut short their official US visit immediately to return home, the Pakistani Express News channel said. It was the first official delegation that refused to go through the body scanners since they were installed at 19 US airports last month.

Abbas Afridi, the head of the delegation, said the US state department had invited them to Washington to discuss security and development projects in the tribal region, with a promise that they would not be subjected to body scanning. “We were not scanned when we arrived on March 28 in Washington from Pakistan, but on Saturday when we wanted to travel to another city the authorities told us that we would be scanned,” said Afridi.

Your apelike ancestors probably aren’t top of mind when you enter the polling booth. But a new study suggests that human evolution may have a big influence on whether you’re liberal or conservative—not to mention how smart you are, whether you believe in God, or whether you’ve got a cheatin’ heart.

It’s all linked to the evolution of intelligence, says author Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Kanazawa’s theory is that intelligence—particularly our ability for on-the-spot problem solving and reasoning—arose as an adaptation to deal with the unusual and unexpected, such as a sudden forest fire.

Since disasters like that are rare in daily life, responding to them wouldn’t likely be something our ancestors were hard-wired to “know” how to do. Surviving the fire required both the ability to think up a new behavior, and the willingness to try it out.

Passed down via genetics, those two traits are still the calling cards of an intelligent brain—expressed as a tendency toward adopting nontraditional social values and preferences, Kanazawa says in his new study, published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

As a result of their iconoclastic ancestry, he suggests, people with higher levels of intelligence are more likely to adopt social values and behaviors that are relatively new to human life—liberalism, atheism, staying up late, and (for men) monogamy, for example.

Twice in as many months, events have conspired to give the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) exactly what it wants despite the public’s intense opposition. You need not be a skeptic for this to seem oddly convenient rather than merely coincidental.

First was the Underwear Bomber’s attempt on Christmas Day to emasculate himself aboard his flight. The TSA immediately exploited that fashion faux-pas to push its favorite toy, whole-body imagers. These pornographic scanners peer through passengers’ clothing to photograph the bombs so many tape to their bodies — and the bodies themselves.

The TSA has been trying to turn airports into peep-shows courtesy of these strip-machines since 2002. But judging from passengers’ refusal to submit, they preferred to lose the War on Terror rather than exhibit themselves to government agents. The idea was so patently offensive that Congress, never known for its prudery, introduced legislation last year restricting the scanners’ use.

Then along comes Umar Farouk Abdullmutallab and his burning britches and bingo, resistance to titillating the TSA drops (at least among Congressmen: Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), sponsor of the aforementioned legislation, mourned that though “it passed in the House with overwhelming support on both sides of the aisle,” Abdullmutallab’s stunt renders “the Senate . . . very reluctant. And I understand why.”) Whole-body scanners are now zooming along the fast track and coming very soon to an airport near you.

Never mind that “it is unclear whether the [scanners] or other technologies would have detected [Abdullmutallab's] weapon,” as the Government Accountability Office put it, nor that his diaper wasn’t imminently dangerous since the odds of his successfully detonating it were low. (Explosives are notoriously temperamental: they require careful handling and precise conditions. Yes, Abdullmutallab might possibly have blown a hole in his plane — just as birds could fly into its engine and force a landing on the Hudson River. But both are unlikely). Game, set, match, with the TSA and manufacturers gloating over $300 million in “stimulus funds . . . allocated for technology to detect explosives carried by passengers.”

The TSA pants to control private planes as much as it does to see us naked. And so it’s muttered for years about the dangers of “General Aviation.” According to Craig Fuller, president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), GA encompasses “all flying except scheduled airlines and the military,” everything from hobbyists having fun to helicopters monitoring traffic and volunteers zipping donated organs from one hospital to another.

But, the fear-mongering TSA objects, who really knows who’s climbing into all those single-engine Cessnas and corporate jets? Well, the pilot for one. His passengers, for another. And the staff at GA’s airports, which tend to be small, friendly, and intimate. “The general aviation community is a very tight-knit group,” wrote Vic Bird, director of the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, when explaining the facts of life to the TSA. “Airplane owners know who is riding in their plane and where they are going.” Inflicting the TSA on private pilots and their passengers is akin to stationing screeners in your dining room and searching the guests at your next dinner-party.

I’m blessed with a cousin as generous as he is successful who has piloted his own plane for decades. Jerry and his wife have offered me one of the four seats in their tiny Cessna 182 numerous times. The employees at the airport nearest his home all know Jerry by name. They know his wife; they’re getting to know me, as hospitable as my cousins are; and they know his plane.

Ditto for the corporate craft housed at this airfield. Like aficionados of cars or sailboats or any other hobby, my cousin and the other pilots love looking at, discussing, and dreaming about bigger, fancier planes than theirs. They’re often friends with the owners of these babies; one tycoon even offered me a tour of her plane when I last visited my cousins.

That time, Jerry flew us to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, suburban to New York City. Teterboro is much larger and less personal than the airfield near my cousin’s southern city — but the traffic in and out is a fraction of what a commercial airport sees. Ergo, the staff is almost as friendly and collegial as their southern counterparts. GA reminds me of the small town we all idealize, where everyone knows and generally likes everyone else, with respect, good humor, and courtesy as common as they are taken for granted. It’s Mayberry in the skies.

No wonder most people in GA passionately love flying. The contrast between it and commercial aviation is stunning, complete, infuriating. I’m not the only one who’s impressed: USA Today described GA as “a world of ease and tranquility unknown to [commercial] airline passengers, who endure long trips to airports, costly parking, slow security screening, packed airplanes and delayed flights.”

What accounts for the difference? The TSA’s absence, for starters. Plus, there’s less interference from the Feds overall. Enormous subsidies and grants keep both GA and commercial aviation aloft, as is the case for most industries in our corporatist economy; along with the loot comes smothering supervision from the Feds. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates GA as it does commercial flight, but its rules for the latter seriously outnumber those for the former. These dictates cover every conceivable situation commercial pilots might encounter (and some inconceivable ones, too), whether it’s the time they leave the gate for take-off or their reaction to a skyjacking (the FAA ordered passengers and crew to sit tight and comply with the criminals’ demands — a decree that helped kill 3000 folks on 9/11). Myriad regulations hamstring GA, too, but it’s blissfully free by comparison.

There’s also far more competition among GA’s airports than commercial ones. State or local governments almost always own and run commercial airports while enforcing geographic monopolies; if you figure other passengers are as fed up with the high prices, abuse, and delays of Your City’s Airport as you are, you can’t get rich off that dissatisfaction by building a competitor. Occasionally, metropolitan areas boast several airports, such as New York City’s LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark or Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare, but choice is still elusive because the airlines’ schedules (which federal regs heavily influence) usually decide which one you’ll patronize.

Compare that with GA, whose airports are often privately owned. There are many more of them, too, so many they could be a fast-food franchise, and they pepper the country: my cousin once remarked that GA is incredibly safe since you’re almost never more than 10 or 15 miles away from a landing strip. Depending on whether a dirt runway in the wilds of Alaska qualifies as an airport, GA counts anywhere from several thousand to about 20,000, versus approximately 560 commercial ones. The staffs treat customers as customers — and extremely valued ones at that –, not terrorists. Managers know that disgruntled private pilots have plenty of options, unlike commercial ones. “‘The beauty of an airport like Centennial is if it gets crowded, you go cross-town to Metro or to Front Range’ to land, says Robert Olislagers, executive director of Centennial Airport near Denver. Rocky Mountain Metro and Front Range, two other general-aviation airports, are about 20 miles away.” And Randall Earnest, manager of Mercer County Airport in West Virginia, doesn’t charge pilots to land because “Nobody would land here if I charged a fee . . . You’d land at an airport that’s not charging a fee.”

In this luxurious, secure, very personal world, could a terrorist load a plane full of explosives without either the airport’s staff or private pilots and their guests catching him? Could he sneak onto a corporate or chartered jet dressed in Abdumutallab’s briefs and enjoy better luck at detonating them? Maybe. But it’s extremely unlikely.

No matter. The TSA lusts to control GA, and you can see why: by any measure except how many passengers it carries, GA dwarfs commercial aviation. Not only are there more airports, almost three times as many private pilots are licensed as commercial ones. And the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of the Inspector General says GA “accounts for 77% of all flights in the United States.”

Then there’s the freedom: fun, immense, exhilarating. You decide where you’re going, and when, and with whom. You take along whatever you please, subject only to aviation’s physics.

GA’s size and the independence it confers have the TSA constantly “threaten[ing]” to “strangle” it with “onerous and ill-conceived security regulations,” as the AOPA put it mildly. In 2008, the agency “proposed” that “private-jet passengers . . . be checked against watch lists.” It would also “require jet operators to keep weapons, including pocket knives, off their planes, and . . . force 315 airports used only by private planes to enact security plans.” Though the TSA was starting with “private jets,” it wasn’t fooling anyone: as always with Leviathan in general and the TSA in particular, the agency would expand its dictatorship to consume GA in toto.

My cousin knows more about flying than all the bureaucrats at the TSA and the FAA put together. And the agency’s “proposal” had him hopping mad. “That damn TSA,” Jerry’d say. “They just wanna take all the fun out of things.” The rest of the industry agreed. So did Congress, for obvious reasons: “. . . lawmakers also regularly use general-aviation airports to get around their districts and states, sometimes in planes with lobbyists. Members of Congress took 2,154 trips on corporate-owned jets from 2001 to 2006. . . ” Even the DHS’s Inspector General slapped the TSA down. Reporting in May 2009 on “TSA’s Role in General Aviation Security,” the IG decided that it basically doesn’t have one: “We determined that general aviation presents only limited and mostly hypothetical threats to security. We also determined that the steps general aviation airport owners and managers have taken to enhance security are positive and effective.”

On February 8, 2010, Mayberry sighed with enormous relief when the trade press announced that the TSA would back off, or, in the agency’s terms, “revise,” its infernal scheme: “During the proposal’s comment period. . . , TSA was flooded with more than 4,800 comments from individuals and aviation entities that were concerned with TSA’s current proposal. And apparently those comments, including many that were voiced during public meetings held across the nation, have gotten TSA’s attention. . . ”

Ten days later, tax-protestor Joseph Andrew Stack flew his Piper Cherokee into one of the IRS’s offices in Austin, Texas. That shocked not only the Feds (or so they claimed) but everyone who knew Mr. Stack as a “stereotypical software guy” and “mild-mannered” musician. Patrick Beach, “who once played in a band with Stack,” testified to the surprise. “I talked to a lot [sic] of people who knew him better than I did, and no one saw anything like this coming.”

Also unsuspected were Mr. Stack’s “political feelings.” “Billy Eli, a band member of Stack’s, has known the man for about five years … ‘The Joe I knew was mostly apolitical,’ he told Fox News. ‘I never heard him talk politics…’”

Mr. Stack knew better than to discuss his plans for revenge within GA’s close community; he didn’t dribble saliva while ranting for hours; there are no reports of his sweating, a sure sign of impending mayhem, according to the TSA. Short of reading his mind, no one, and certainly not the Feds, could have predicted and prevented his attack.

Nevertheless, “the Transportation Security Administration will review the fiery crash . . . and use that information to shape future anti-terrorism regulations for the nation’s 220,000 private airplanes.” But just as whole-body scanning won’t find underwear bombs, groping private pilots and their families won’t end blowback such as Mr. Stack dished out.

Which is limited anyway: Douglas Laird, a “security expert,” says, “You can do about as much damage with [Mr. Stack's small] plane as you could with an SUV loaded with fuel . . . I can’t get agitated about it.” Nor can “aviation-security consultant Rich Roth.” He considers GA “just a risk you’re going to have to accept . . . There’s nothing we could really do short of saying you guys can’t fly planes.”

Perhaps that’s next.

The greenhouse gasses keep the Earth 30° C warmer than it would otherwise be without them in the atmosphere, so instead of the average surface temperature being -15° C, it is 15° C. Carbon dioxide contributes 10% of the effect so that is 3° C. The pre-industrial level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 280 ppm. So roughly, if the heating effect was a linear relationship, each 100 ppm contributes 1° C. With the atmospheric concentration rising by 2 ppm annually, it would go up by 100 ppm every 50 years and we would all fry as per the IPCC predictions.

But the relationship isn’t linear, it is logarithmic. In 2006, Willis Eschenbach posted this graph on Climate Audit showing the logarithmic heating effect of carbon dioxide relative to atmospheric concentration:

Lo and behold, the first 20 ppm accounts for over half of the heating effect to the pre-industrial level of 280 ppm, by which time carbon dioxide is tuckered out as a greenhouse gas. One thing to bear in mind is that the atmospheric concentration of CO2 got down to 180 ppm during the glacial periods of the ice age the Earth is currently in (the Holocene is an interglacial in the ice age that started three million years ago).

Plant growth shuts down at 150 ppm, so the Earth was within 30 ppm of disaster. Terrestrial life came close to being wiped out by a lack of CO2 in the atmosphere. If plants were doing climate science instead of us humans, they would have a different opinion about what is a dangerous carbon dioxide level.

Some of the IPCC climate models predict that temperature will rise up to 6° C as a consequence of the doubling of the pre-industrial level of 280 ppm. So let’s add that to the graph above and see what it looks like:

The IPCC models water vapour-driven positive feedback as starting from the pre-industrial level. Somehow the carbon dioxide below the pre-industrial level does not cause this water vapour-driven positive feedback. If their water vapour feedback is a linear relationship with carbon dioxide, then we should have seen over 2° C of warming by now. We are told that the Earth warmed by 0.7° C over the 20^th Century. Where I live – Perth, Western Australia – missed out on a lot of that warming.

Nothing happened up to the Great Pacific Climate Shift of 1976, which gave us a 0.4° warming, and it has been flat for the last four decades.

Let’s see what the IPCC model warming looks like when it is plotted as a cumulative bar graph:

The natural heating effect of carbon dioxide is the blue bars and the IPCC projected anthropogenic effect is the red bars. Each 20 ppm increment above 280 ppm provides about 0.03° C of naturally occurring warming and 0.43° C of anthropogenic warming. That is a multiplier effect of over thirteen times. This is the leap of faith required to believe in global warming.

The whole AGW belief system is based upon positive water vapour feedback starting from the pre-industrial level of 280 ppm and not before. To paraphrase George Orwell, anthropogenic carbon dioxide molecules are more equal than the naturally occurring ones. Much, much more equal.

Senior scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WITG) has rejected the Global Warming Theory and told that the Himalayas are quite safer zone on earth, where Global Warming has no role in controlling the conditions.

In an exclusive chat with HT, Director WIHG Dr AK Dubey has said that the conditions of Himalayas are controlled by the winter snowfall rather than external factors like much hyped Global Warming. He told that for a concrete result, at least 30 years of continuous research with steady outcome is needed to confirm the actual impact.

“According to a data for over 140 years available with a British weather observatory situated in Mukteswar (2311m) in Almora has actually revealed that temperature in that region witnessed a dip of .4 degrees,” he said.

Since 1991, the institute is monitoring the Himalayas extensively with focusing the glacial studies and last twenty year data has never witnessed a continual retreat. Sometimes, the recession rates have gone up but on an average the rate is very much safer, he added.

Whatever predictions about Himalayas are being made are based on short-term studies conducted on glaciers, which have no comparison with Himalayan Glaciers, he told. “Our glaciers are giant high altitude glaciers above 4000m altitude with a permanent temperature below 20 degrees Celsius. And has no comparison with the Alps Glaciers or Alaskan Glacier which are at sea level,” he said.

Dr. DP Dobhal, eminent glaciologist added that however there is a change in climate in terms of shrinking of winter period but still a lot is dependent upon the snowfall occurs. Currently the rate of recession is in between 16-20 meters a year for glacial retreat in Himalayas, whereas 30 percent of the glaciers are more than 10km in length, he said.

Pakistani security agents denied on Monday that an American al Qaeda spokesman wanted in the United States for treason had been arrested, saying there had been confusion over the identity of a detained suspect.

Some Pakistani officials had said on Sunday that Adam Gadahn, a California-born convert to Islam with a $1 million U.S. bounty on his head, had been arrested on the outskirts of the city of Karachi.

But a senior government official and two security agents said on Monday the suspected al Qaeda operative picked up in Karachi was not Gadahn.

“Our initial impression was that the guy was Adam Gadahn but that information now looks incorrect,” said one security official, who declined to be identified. The arrested man was believed to be an American who goes by the alias Abu Yahya, the officials said. Gadahn is known to have used a similar alias.

Ministry of Defence chiefs face embarrassment after a picture of a combat soldier wearing equipment bearing a racially offensive remark was printed in its official magazine.

The image published in Soldier magazine shows his left legpad with the words ‘Get some Paki’ scrawled on it.

Officials airbrushed the online version, but the 90,000 printed copies had already been put on sale, with 70,000 sent to serving British troops – many in Afghanistan.

The picture was printed in January’s edition alongside an article about new rations packs for troops.

Hundreds more town hall staff and private security guards are to be handed police-style powers in a fresh Home Office drive to create an army of civilian “spies”.

Almost 1,700 people, also including car park attendants and dog wardens, already have powers to hand out a string of fines and even take photographs of low level offenders under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme.

But the Government has quietly announced it plans to review the scheme with chief police officers to see how it can be expanded further.

Rank and file officers warned the move is “blurring the lines” of legitimate law enforcement and is creating a “third tier” of policing.

Even chief constables are now cautious over the scheme following it’s rapid growth, which has seen numbers increase by a fifth in just 12 months.

It is well known in Texas that our Law Enforcement Officers are the best in the nation when it comes to that moment in time when the feet need to hit the ground. When you call 911, you can bet that Texas Law Enforcement Officers will respond quickly and deal with the situation at hand decisively.

This bring us to the story about a Tyler Texas man named Henry Walter Wooten, 54 years old. Henry isn’t the brightest toker in the world. He was caught by law enforcement within 1000 feet of Ebenezer Day Care Center in Tyler with baggies of weed in his pockets toking on a joint. On Thursday, March 4th, Henry received 35 years in a state correctional facility.

Trey Cloud, DPS forensic chemist, testified that the weight of the marijuana seized from Wooten when he was arrested was 4.6 ounces, and the packaging alone weighed 1.06 ounces. He also testified that the drug seized from Wooten was indeed marijuana.

This is, more or less, a warning for those who would openly defy Marijuana Laws in Texas. The Texas Justice system is a series of policies designed to incarcerate people, not rehabilitate or help them in anyway. Henry’s case is unique because his possession limit was on the cusp of being a misdemeanor. In Texas, it is a misdemeanor to possess four ounces or less. One to two ounces is a class B, and three to four is a class A misdemeanor. Henry was found guilty of possessing four ounces to one pound, a felony which could be 2 years in jail and a $10,000 fine. However, since Henry was in a “drug free zone”, Smith County Assistant District Attorney Richard Vance had asked for the jury to give Wooten a sentence of 99 years. Do you think he got off easy?According to the University of North Texas Rehabilitative Studies professor, James Quinn, Texas is on the cusp of a real grass roots legalization effort.

76% of Texans are pro-Medical Marijuana and 46% are for blanket legalization. However, 80% of those who are in favor of Medical Marijuana believe they stand alone in their thoughts.

The fact is that most of you who are reading this article will probably believe that sentencing a person to prison for 35 years for the possession of a non-toxic, non-addicting, all natural substance that has proven anti-cancer capabilities is not really protecting society from anything dangerous.
